General Information on Glasgow Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Markets
The Glasgow wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market is one of the largest horticultural markets in the United Kingdom, its customer base covers the whole of Scotland and extends as far as the North of England and Northern Ireland.
Fresh produce from almost every country in the world is sold in the market and this is possible due to continuing improvements of the worldwide transportation network. It is estimated that over £250 million worth of produce passes through the market each year.
There is a stance occupancy rate of 95% and over 600 people are employed directly within Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Market. In excess of 2000 vehicles visit the markets daily, these are not just from the UK but also from Continental Europe.
The Flower wholesalers in the market have established a reputation for quality and service and have been quick to respond to demand and changing trends within this sector. The flower market continues to expand and there now five tenant companies who deal exclusively with flowers.
These Wholesale Markets are located within the Blochairn complex less than 1km from Junction 14 of the M8 Motorway.
The Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Markets are designed in a T Shape formation. There are 81 sales units with frontage on either side of a 60ft (18.29m) wide covered buyers roadway set out in a T shape.
Standard Sales Unit:
The standard sales unit is 24ft (7.32m) by 90ft (27.4m) and also comprises an upper floor office area. The total sales space and office accommodation extends to 214,200 square feet (19899.18 square metres).
The buyer’s roadway in addition to a buyers walk on either side allows vehicles access to the front of the sales areas for the collection of produce. All deliveries are carried out at the unloading area at the rear of the sales units. This enables the two functions to be kept separate.
